Custom Bag Measurement Tolerances: Define Datums Before Bulk Inspection

Custom Bag Measurement Tolerances: Define Datums Before Bulk Inspection

A soft bag can produce different measurements when it is empty, filled, flattened or pulled under tension. If a buyer and factory use different methods, a tolerance dispute may be a measurement dispute first. Define the bag’s condition, reference points and method before assigning acceptable dimensional variation to a custom product.

Separate external dimensions from usable fit

Identify whether each dimension describes the outside body, clear interior, opening or a particular pocket. A stated external width is not the same as the space available for a rigid tray. Use a drawing that marks the actual points to be measured.

For a roll-top or expandable construction, show the intended closure state. Do not compare a fully extended panel height with a finished closed height and treat the difference as production variation.

Specify a repeatable measuring condition

State whether inserts are fitted, whether the bag is supported and whether any defined load is present. Record how the tape or gauge is positioned and whether pressure or stretching is permitted. Photographs of the method are often clearer than an unexplained list of numbers.

Use the same method on the approved sample and the bulk inspection sample. If different operators obtain inconsistent readings, resolve the procedure before deciding which production units are outside tolerance.

Choose tolerances from the actual requirement

Ask which dimensions control container fit, assembly or visible alignment. These may need a different review from a non-critical soft panel. Do not apply an arbitrary universal plus-or-minus value to every dimension, material and bag size.

The factory should review the proposed tolerance against construction and process capability. If it cannot be met reliably, discuss a design or fit allowance rather than leaving an unrealistic figure in the purchase specification.

Link the method to inspection and changes

Keep the measurement drawing, approved sample and inspection form under one revision. Record the unit, measured value and method for any questioned result. Photos should show the relevant reference points, not only a tape laid somewhere across the bag.

If a liner, insert or closure changes, review the affected dimensions again. An unchanged external size can hide a change in usable fit, and the earlier acceptance method may no longer answer the buyer’s main concern.

Dimension Measurement condition Acceptance basis
Clear base width Insert fitted; reference points marked Agreed container fit
Closed height Defined closure state Approved finished drawing
Pocket opening No unsupported stretching Agreed usable access

Buyer FAQs

Is there one standard tolerance suitable for every soft bag?

No universal value should be assumed. Agree the method and tolerance for the particular dimension and construction.

Can outside dimensions prove that a rigid container fits?

No. Specify and check the usable internal space and insertion path separately.
