The carrying system is part of the bag specification, not an accessory to decide after the body is finished. It affects access, balance, the way the bag is loaded and the points that need reinforcement. For a custom project, start with how people will move the bag in everyday use.
A waterproof backpack, a cooler bag and an insulated delivery bag can carry very different loads. The right configuration must be reviewed with the actual construction and use conditions.
Start with four questions
- What will be inside, and how will that load be distributed?
- How far and how often will the user carry the bag?
- Does the user need both hands free?
- Must the contents remain accessible while the bag is being carried?
Also describe storage, cleaning and any vehicle or equipment interaction. Give the factory the dimensions of the main items and a realistic load arrangement. A product photo alone rarely answers these questions.
Hand carry: focus on position and access
Hand-carry handles may suit short movements, loading and unloading. Review their position relative to the loaded center of the bag and the opening. Check whether two handles meet comfortably, whether they obstruct the closure and whether their attachment points pull the body out of shape.
Where handles are combined with another system, specify what each is intended to do. A positioning handle should not be described as a load-bearing lifting point without an agreed design and verification basis.
Shoulder carry: review adjustment and attachment
A shoulder strap offers an alternative when a user needs one hand available. Check the adjustment range, strap routing, padding and the position of buckles or clips against the loaded sample. Examine whether the bag twists, tips or blocks access during the intended use.
If the strap is removable, define the connector and where it should be stored when detached. Discuss replacement and cleaning needs before freezing the specification. A change in the strap width or connector can also require changes at the attachment point.
Backpack carry: specify the complete arrangement
A backpack configuration should be reviewed as a system: shoulder straps, attachment positions, back panel, adjustment and the bag body. Test access and handling with the intended contents inside. For a cooler backpack, loading and closure access still matter even when hands-free carrying is the priority.
Do not assume that adding two straps turns any bag body into a suitable backpack. The sample review should consider how the loaded shape sits, how the straps are adjusted and which parts of the construction carry the force.
Protect the function of the bag body
For a waterproof or insulated design, discuss attachment methods together with the body construction. Stitching, welding, reinforcements and hardware positions must be evaluated against the intended performance requirement. The relevant test should cover the finished configuration, including any changes made during customization.
Agree test methods and pass criteria for the intended load and usage. An informal trial is useful for spotting access or handling issues, but it does not replace controlled validation of a performance claim.

- Intended contents, dimensions and load arrangement
- Primary and secondary carrying methods
- Adjustment, padding and detachable-part requirements
- Opening, pocket and cleaning requirements
- Relevant exposure or performance requirements
- Reference photos and the details that should change
Mark which details are mandatory and which can be reviewed during development. Keep revisions with the sample record so the carrying system and body are approved together.
